It's definitely been awhile since our latest release! There's been a lot that's happened from multiple heart surgeries to a new job. It's been so long since I've posted here and an entirely new world. AS I write this I'm recovering from having contracted Covid on 3/6. It was quite rough and my heart goes out to others that have had to battle with it. I've had a fun time in creating my newest line-up of plastic inserts. A few years ago I built my own foam core game insert for Descent: Journeys in the Dark 2nd edition so we could hold the base game plus and expansion in the game box. While I enjoyed doing it, one thing I found out during the process is that it takes quite a bit of time.

The best part however was simply pulling out the coin holder and using it throughout the game to keep the money organized. Since there is plenty of paying the bank and collecting coins, using the insert to keep the coins corralled is wonderful.

Roll for the Galaxy is a fun dice-rolling, dice-allocating, space empire building game that packs a lot of re-playable fun in a game. It comes with a lot of dice as well as a lot of tiles.

Well made inserts help with segregating various elements, factions, sorting meeples by colour, hold different card types, figurines, markers and everything else you can imagine. They also make the set-up much quicker. From my experience: a good insert solution for Gloomhaven can save you 30-40 minutes of setting up the scenario and putting it back to the box later on. With the regular box you usually spend more time on set-up than actually playing.

Game time also become shorter, as players can easily take all the elements they need each turn straight from the box, instead of looking for them all over the table. This also helps in teaching new people how to play, as the game feels more simple. Finally: inserts protect the components and make games transport friendly.

These are usually made by the creators of the game and included by default. If they fit the product, it can be a great, lightweight and unexpensive solution. And some scissor and glue pros can always try to design their own.

So what every good game insert tray should have? Most tabletop gamers have a specific set of requirements. Surprisingly, many inserts on the market, especially these included in actual games lack a huge amount of these features. So what makes an insert tray good?

That said, if you have a game you play a lot, your groups favorite game, a game you are going to get to the table over and over again, then yes, it can be worth it to invest in some accessories for that game. Being able to fit everything you need to play in one box makes the game both more portable and easier to store. Reducing set up time means more time actually doing the fun part: playing the game.

Custom box inserts do one thing, they organize your games. They give you a place to put things. Good ones give you a place to put all the things, including things that come in expansions. This organization should lead to two positive effects.

1) Improved storage. The game should become more compact, easy to transport and store better on your shelves. The best example of this that I own is an insert for Battlestar Galactica. This insert fits into the core game box but has dedicated space to hold not only the core game but all three expansion boxes! For those of us without much room to store our games, this is amazing. This means that my BSG collection now takes up 25% less than the space it used to take up. Added to that everything is neat and organized and in the original box, so it still looks good on the shelf. Sure I could just toss all the components in a big freezer bag and it would take up less room, but come on. No one wants to go through their drawer of baggies when trying to decide what game to play.

So, you bought Gloomhaven, you are enjoying it but then rapidly discovered in horror that putting everything back and then finding it again requires more time than actually playing the game.

An organizer is exactly what the name suggests: an item made of different materials that helps you to separate the different objects of your game and organize them in the most efficient way to find them only when you need them. As opposite you know, of dropping everything on the table and split all objects before playing.

A special mention goes to the materials used to make the inserts. Gloomhaven inserts are mostly either wood or foam based. Jaws of the Lion, the pre-sequel of Gloomhaven, contains a plastic organizer that mostly does the job.

However, Gloomhaven does not have any plastic to help you. The main difference between wood and foam-based inserts is the type of glue you should be using. Both require a minimum of DIY skills and some time to assemble everything plus more time to wait for the glue to dry.

Which one to use will strongly depend on your budget, what you want from it and of course the availability in your region. I want to say that the cheap ones are just as good as the more expensive options, but that is really not the case. I tried to cheap out on spending to much money on my Gloomhaven insert with the Foldes Space version, but the game is still a mess to set up and especially getting stored away again. My suggestion would be to go with the proven Broken Token or the deluxe Smonex version. I know I wish I had done that!
